Pranab Mukherjee replaces Pratiba Patil as the President of India from Today

Pranab Mukherjee as the 13th president of India

Pranab Mukherjee is sworn in as the 13th president of India today. He is from West Bengal serving indian politics for the past 40 years woking with the top notch leaders including Indira Gandhi. Before attending the swearing in ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, he paid his homage to late leaders Indira Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri accompanied by the Urban development minister, Kamal Nath.

Chief Justice of India, S.H.Kapadia admistered oath to Pranab Mukherjee in the Central Hall of Parliament in the presence of Vice president Hamid Ansari, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, UPA Chair person Sonia Gandhi, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira kumar among other leaders. He was honoured with a 21 gun salute when he was swapping seats with the outgoing president Pratibha Patil. Then he gave his first speech in English as the President of India where he covers topics on secularism, democracy and his role in politics and as the president. Hindi translation of the president's speech was delivered by the Vice president of India, Hamid Ansari.

Other prominent members who were present in the ceremony were Mamata Banerjee who initially opposed Pranab's nomination as the UPA candidate, Bollywood Star Mithun Chakraborty, Rahul Gandhi and several MLAs from West Bengal, the home town of Pranab Mukherjee who has won this election for president with 69.38 % votes.
